The Pyrenees are mountains of immense beauty, and full of stories. As we set forth in walking-boots, by daylight, and well-fed, we'll be remembering those who once walked less well-shod, fearful for their lives, with anguished, impossible, relentless weeks behind them, and in front of them dreams of freedom, of possible new chapters with loved ones, one day, perhaps - stories of refugees in the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
I will not be alone in having lost good friends recently to cancer – this walk is in their memory: Lyn James of Guelph, Ontario, a presence always in my home, her beautiful embroidery part of my every day, as is the Native American prayer her family chose; and to Bruno Ganz, that most human of Berlin angels, loved by many for the wonderful body of work he leaves us – but also such a gentle soul and so modest in his compassionate support to his friends. This walk is also in memory of illustrator and writer Judith Kerr.
Thank you for your generosity.
